Ex-Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been sent by Filipino authorities to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands to face a murder charge linked to a crackdown on drugs that killed thousands of people. Duterte has never denied his heavy-handed approach, insisting that it was necessary to rid the Southeast Asian country of crime.
High-level accountability for state atrocities has been difficult to pursue in Southeast Asia. Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia, Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand, Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar and Hun Sen of Cambodia are other Southeast Asian leaders or former leaders who have been accused of orchestrating or presiding over major human rights violations.
